Hazlitt Hotel Group re-writes the rules of engagement for 2016’s Leap Year

Hazlitt Hotel Group, Georgian boltholes in London’s fashionable and lively neighbourhoods, is re-writing the rules of engagement for the 29th February.

2016’s Leap Year will revive traditional Valentine’s Day customs, when men take control of courting, and instead encourage women to grasp the reins of romance and be forthright with their proposals. Comprising The Rookery, Batty Langley’s and Hazlitt’s, the privately owned hideaways are reminiscent of aristocratic household and marries period charm with the needs of today’s sophisticated traveller.

Noted for their un-compromising attention to detail the properties have a provenance for romance and a legacy of their former residents; from femme fatale, tarts and courtesans to their links with Casanova, the legendary lover.

Batty Langley’s, the latest addition to the collection, is situated in Shoreditch and is nestled amongst the City’s high-rises and cobbled streets. Once the home to silk merchants, petty thieves and vagabonds, the area has been transformed to one of the capital’s edgiest

destinations. Notorious lovers Jack Sheppard and Edgeworth Bess give their names to two adjoining bedrooms. While the Earl of Bolingbroke Suite is fit for a Duke, with an antique marble bath from Tuscany, a canopy bed, originally, built for a bishop and a terrace with views to the Olympic Park.

Hazlitt’s, Soho, occupies a group of historic townhouses in an area once known for being risqué and racy. The former home of Teresa Cornelys who was reputed by those who enjoyed her favours as well-bred, good-looking and always beautifully dressed. The namesake’s bedroom features a bed with hand-carved gilded cherubs and an adjoining private sitting room, perfect for a discreet and intimate liaison.

Atop The Rookery sits The Rook’s Nest in Smithfield. The two-storey penthouse suite boasts views encompassing the romance associated with St Paul’s Cathedral and the more austere Old Bailey. The bedroom is dominated by an ornate bed flanked at each corner by a gilded blackamoor. As well as a Victorian bathing machine on a raised plinth in one corner of the room.
