Choosing the perfect wedding rings for you and your partner

Planning a wedding is hard and you probably have a million other things to do in preparation for your big day. However, your wedding rings are a symbol of your love for each other and will last forever, so choosing the right set is quite an important task. That's why we asked Emily Tebbutt, Jewellery Commercial Manager at Ramsdens Jewellery, to share her tips on choosing the perfect wedding rings for you and your partner.

Before you buy

Before shopping for the perfect wedding rings, it's important to have two things organised: ring size and budget.

Finding out your ring size is simpler than you might think: for total accuracy you can pop into a jeweller and have your fingers measured by a professional, but you can easily measure them at home instead. Using string, dental floss, or paper, wrap it around your finger marking where the end meets. Measure the length in millimetres and use an online ring size chart to determine what size rings to buy.

Budget-wise, the choice of metal, quality of stone, and other features all contribute to the price of a ring. It is important to sit down as a couple, discuss a budget and select any extra features carefully. If you're struggling to compromise on quality, why not go pre-owned? Wedding ring shoppers today have a wealth of classic and modern styles to choose from, and pre-owned rings are the best way to get the perfect style that you and your partner want at a price within your budget.

Perfect wedding rings on logShape and size

When considering shape and size, one of the main things to look out for is the thickness of the band and how wide it is on your finger, especially if you're not used to wearing jewellery. Even if you know you prefer thicker or thinner rings, it might be worth trying a few different styles on regardless of your taste just to make sure that you're settling on a ring you could wear comfortably every day. You could even begin wearing a practice ring in preparation to get used to how it feels. While you might want perfectly matching wedding rings, differences in ring size should be considered when choosing a style: smaller fingers might need a slightly slimmer style of band, for example.

Make it personal

Rings best suited as wedding rings are generally made from yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, silver, or platinum. They can be embellished, perhaps with both of your favourite coloured stones. Filigree or knotted rings can be a good way to indicate heritage, particularly the weaving of two different coloured metals. What do you want to represent? Take the time to discuss your preferences and if you disagree, don't worry! There's no law, custom, or tradition to say that your wedding rings should match. If you're both happy that the rings you have chosen are representative of your commitment to each other, then you can make your wedding rings as unique as your relationship.

Complement your engagement ring

If you'll be wearing your engagement ring and wedding band together once married, make sure that they will complement one another. Decide whether to match the colour of your engagement ring or find wedding bands in a contrasting metal and consider whether the size of the stone requires a shaped wedding band that can accommodate it.

A more extravagant engagement ring will probably suit a plain wedding band, whereas a simple engagement ring can get away with something a little fancier. While this is a general rule of thumb, it's important to stay true to who you are as a couple — there's no reason why you can't go as minimalist or as extravagant as you like.

When you manage to find time to work out which wedding rings to buy, keep this guide in mind and you'll have the perfect wedding band to remind you every day of the love and happiness that you share. The important thing is to work together to find something that you both will cherish for decades to come.
